ONCE UPON A TIME…
Elim Chapel began its journey in 1910 as the Ellice Avenue Mission on Ellice Avenue, officially adopting the name Elim Chapel in 1913. The term “Elim,” derived from Hebrew (Ex. 15:27), signifies an oasis of rest and refreshment, often associated with palm trees, symbolizing God’s abundant provision. From the outset, Elim Chapel has identified itself as a non-denominational Bible-believing church.
In 1927, Sidney Smith acquired the current building located at 546 Portage Ave. During the 1930s and 1940s, Elim Chapel emerged as a significant ministry in Winnipeg, drawing esteemed theological scholars and renowned pastors for summer preaching sabbaticals.
In 1974, a fire devastated the sanctuary, leading to its reconstruction in 1976-77. Another fire in 1999 destroyed the back addition of Elim Chapel, which was subsequently rebuilt to include a Multipurpose Room, Staff Offices, and a Children’s Wing.
Throughout the years, Elim Chapel has faced numerous challenges, both physically and spiritually. Its strength lies in its unwavering commitment to Scripture and the faithful proclamation of Christ’s message.
